SmartCheck™ debit card FAQs

The SmartCheck™ Card makes purchases easy. Read on to find out how the card will quickly become the favorite in your wallet.

1. How does the SmartCheck™ debit card work?

At an ATM, the SmartCheck™ debit card works like a cash card. When using the SmartCheck™ card to purchase products and services, the merchant looks for the VISA® logo and processes the transaction the same way a credit card transaction is processed. However, the difference is that the dollar amount of the purchase is deducted from your checking account immediately.

2. How long will it take for a merchant purchase to be deducted from my checking account when I use my SmartCheck™ debit card?

Posting of a merchant purchase occurs similar to the amount of time a check needs to post to your checking account (two to five days).

3. What happens when I return something I purchased with a SmartCheck™ debit card?

The merchant will process a credit that will post to your checking account within the same period of time it took for the original transaction to appear on your statement (generally two to five days).

4. How will I record my SmartCheck™ debit card transactions?

You will receive a receipt from either the ATM or the merchant. The amount should be recorded in your checkbook register and the receipt retained for your records. Your checking statement will describe the ATM or merchant location, the VISA® clearing date, and the amount.

6. What should I do if my SmartCheck™ debit card is lost or stolen?

If you believe your SmartCheck™ debit card or Personal Identification Number (PIN) has been lost or stolen, please contact Alerus Financial immediately at 800.279.3200.

7. How can I increase the security of online purchases made with my SmartCheck™ debit card?

Alerus proudly offers a free service, Verified by Visa, for all SmartCheck™ debit cards.  Verified by Visa allows you to create a personal password for your account.  When making purchases online through Verified by Visa merchants, you will be prompted to enter in the correct password prior to the completion of the transaction.  The increased security and safety gives you the extra confidence to enjoy shopping online!

8. When making an online purchase with my SmartCheck™ debit card, the merchant prompted me to enroll my card in Verified by Visa—is this a scam?

Verified by Visa is not a scam, but rather a service designed with your protection in mind.  This free service allows you the ability to personally assign your own password to your account.  Your card may be enrolled either through the merchant or by clicking the link below.  When making online purchases, you will then be prompted to enter your password if the merchant participates in the Verified by Visa program.
