Green Mill, which started as a soda fountain in the early 1930s at the corners of Grand and Hamline in St. Paul, Minnesota, has continued as a thriving neighborhood gathering place ever since. Now with nearly 30 locations throughout the Midwest, Green Mill has grown to be one of the most popular neighborhood restaurants and bars in the communities it serves. The Green Mill corporate team is led by Paul Dzubnar, CEO, and Mary Jule Erickson, president and CFO. Green Mill’s mission is to consistently serve extraordinary food and beverage with genuine service and a dash of local flavor.

Situation

Green Mill had been a customer of Prosperan Bank before it was acquired in late 2009 by Alerus Financial. Although at the time they weren’t actively looking for a new bank, Dzubnar and Erickson were pleasantly surprised by what they found in Alerus Financial: genuine service – a cornerstone of Green Mill’s mission.

“Throughout my career, I’ve believed that a strong personal relationship with your bank is absolutely essential,” says Erickson, who’s been with Green Mill for 28 years. “There are a lot of options out there, with many banks offering similar programs, products, and services. It comes down to the partnership you have with your bank. That’s the reason we’re with Alerus, a strong partner with similar values: genuine service and strong, personal relationships.” 

Solution

That financial strength proved valuable while Green Mill faced challenges from the economic environment. “Alerus has been a responsive and supportive partner for us,” says Dzubnar. “With the economic challenges of the last couple of years, it’s been reassuring to have Alerus on our side.”

Erickson says that while Green Mill didn’t need to use a line of credit granted by Alerus, “just to know they’re backing us up is incredibly important.”

Equally important is the relationship Green Mill has with the Alerus team, specifically Scott Johnson, who serves as a Relationship Manager at Alerus Financial.

“With our previous banker, we weren’t getting the service we hoped for. He didn’t go above and beyond for us; we were simply a number,” says Erickson. “It’s the complete opposite with Scott. He jumped right in and is willing to fight for us and look at all the different avenues to ultimately provide us with what we’re looking for and what we need.”

Erickson says that Green Mill, which currently does business with other banks, is in the process of moving its banking needs and accounts to Alerus. In fact, she was so impressed that she moved her personal banking to Alerus.

“I definitely would recommend Alerus and would direct people to Scott Johnson,” concludes Erickson. “He’s going to take care of you. They all are; they’re a great team. They’re doing a great job for us.”
