Starkweather Roofing, Inc. (SRI), a full-service residential and commercial roofing company, was founded by Diane and Jeff Starkweather in 1997. SRI’s service area includes all of Arizona as well as Albuquerque, New Mexico and El Paso, Texas. SRI has earned numerous industry and safety awards and was named the Arizona Roofing Contractors Association’s “Contractor of the Year” in 2008. SRI is the roof contractor for Salt River Fields at Talking Stick, the spring training home of the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Colorado Rockies.
One of the things the Starkweathers expect is to view their bank as a partner in their business. Imagine their disappointment when, after working with their bank for more than five years, they were refused financing for a large project. “Everything was fine while things were running smoothly,” says Diane, who serves as vice president of SRI. “But when it came down to something we needed, something that was most important to us—our line of credit—they didn’t come through.”
Diane and Jeff went to three other banks. Each bank’s process was time-consuming and frustrating and took them away from the day-to-day operation of SRI. Even more frustrating, each bank’s answer was the same: no. “Suddenly we found ourselves without a partner,” Diane says. “We had little choice left but to look to private investors.”
That’s when the Starkweathers found Alerus Bank & Trust.
Jeff, who serves as president of SRI, was visiting with a friend about SRI’s banking frustrations. The friend said he knew Rob Schwister, a relationship manager at Alerus Bank & Trust, and that he would ask Rob to get in touch with Jeff. While reluctant to go through the process again, the Starkweathers met with Rob and explained their balance sheet as well as their line of credit needs. They were more than pleasantly surprised. “Rob assured us that the application process would be painless and that financing wouldn’t be a problem,” Jeff says. “He and Alerus exceeded our expectations. They came through beautifully and painlessly.”
Diane and Jeff say that they’re looking forward to a long relationship—and partnership—with Alerus Bank & Trust. “I don’t have to worry about Alerus pulling our line of credit. We know they’re going to stand behind us, even in tough economic times,” says Jeff. “With their Midwest roots, they have a ‘we’re here to take care of you’ mentality that you don’t find in most other banks.”
With a large project wrapping up, SRI is looking to the future and is bidding on larger projects, knowing that Alerus Bank & Trust will be right there with them. “Working with Alerus has been really positive from our end,” says Diane. “We finally feel like we’re working with a partner, not just a banker."
